Flower Building 101

Class is now in session. Stand by your greenhouses.

School supplies:

• 5-30 of each type of original flowers of the species you are building on (see Note A)
• Mutagens [Contact Ariella, EldradUlthran, Myna(limited selection),Orchid or Zaniac]
• Printed copy of Solvent Findings

Step 1:

Choose one of the original flowers of your chosen flower species from Reference A (bottom of this page) to be your base. This will be decided by the size/color/s you would like and how many genes it takes to build it. Take a few minutes to read over your flower type's gene theory on colors and what gene sets with the genome make which colors on which petal sets. The three basic colors are Magenta/Yellow/Cyan. Secondary colors are listed because they are commonly used, such as yellow+magenta makes red. For reference to colors see Flower Colors. On that page cyan/magenta/yellow correspond to hundreds/tens/ones place while the actual numbers 1-4 are the 4 shades or intensity of those base colors.

Example 1:
Peppermint Stick Pixie Sea Lily (Dwarf red and white petals with red stamen)

Red common outer petals are yellow(GYYY) + magenta(GOOO).
Red uncommon inner petals are yellow uncommon(UROR) + magenta uncommon(UROO).
Red outer stamen are yellow outer stamen(IYYY) + magenta outer stamen(IOOO).
Dwarfx2 (GYOR+GYOR).

That's 8 sets of 4 genes or 32 genes total. Looking at Solvent Findings you see we need to use Clarity to have enough genes to play with.

Step 2:

Chart the genes to change.

Now let's separate the petal/stamen/size sets of the two flowers so it doesn't look like a long mess.

Let's rearrange the Peppermint Stick gene sets around to see if we can match more genes of the two different flowers so we have fewer genes to change on Clarity. Since Clarity is 36 genes long and our flower only needs 32 genes, 'b' in bYbb are only blank spacers just so the genomes of the two flowers match up gene for gene. We will have to 'kill' the GORR in Clarity by changing the 'G' in GORR so it doesn't interfere with our needed gene sets and add an unwanted color. So we can put a Y in to make GYRR.

Step 3:

Decide which mutagens and Original Flowers you will use to change those genes. Homework! (ewwww!) Reference Silken Mutagen Theory to understand how mutagens and swapping pattern works. You will need GenePlaces as a reference.

Example 1: Jump to Peppermint Stick Pixie to see the mutagens mapped onto the gene changes needed.

Step 4:

Double check if those mutagens are EarlySwap or LatterSwap and switch your left/right cross flowers.

Step 5:

Gather your supplies of mutagens(see above for suppliers) and flower bulbs.

Note A: Technically a supply of each type of flower species that its genome is known and it has a chart of gene hits for. You will need to 'pull' genes from different bulbs to insert them into your base flower. As of 2-8-2008:
